Many of us gardeners are familiar with parts of a garden that aren’t draining as they should. Few of us however have had to deal with drainage issues on this scale! The drainage issue here was caused by years of accumulated debris that had accumulated at the bottom of the gulley that acted like a sponge, soaking up all the rain fall which should drain freely down the gulleys cut into the rock of the gulley floor. The only way to resolve this was to start at the bottom and work my way to the top, clearing out the gunge and wheelbarrowing it away. Bakck breaking yes but the result was a gulley that drained better than it had for years.
